Tulum, Quintana Roo — Two American tourists from Illinois sustained minor injuries after their ATV overturned on Kukulcán Avenue, one of the main thoroughfares leading to Tulum’s coastal zone, during the night of Sunday, June 22. The accident occurred when the women failed to notice a speed bump in a poorly lit section of the road, causing them to lose control of the vehicle.

Limited Visibility and Lack of Signage Blamed

Witnesses at the scene reported that the area had insufficient lighting, making it difficult for the tourists to identify the speed bump in time. The impact caused the ATV to flip, leaving both women with scrapes on their arms and legs. Neither required hospitalization, and bystanders assisted them in returning to their accommodations at the Aldea Zamá complex while securing the damaged vehicle.

Local residents and passing drivers stopped to provide aid, confirming that the injuries were not severe. The incident has reignited concerns over road safety along Kukulcán Avenue, a high-traffic route frequently used by tourists on motorcycles and ATVs.

Calls for Improved Road Safety Measures

Tour operators and residents have repeatedly urged authorities to enhance safety measures, including installing reflective signage, fluorescent paint on speed bumps, and improved lighting in critical sections of the avenue. The accident underscores the ongoing risks posed by inadequate infrastructure, particularly for visitors unfamiliar with the area.

Though the outcome was not severe, the incident highlights the need for preventive actions to avoid more serious accidents in the future. The prompt assistance from Tulum locals also emphasized the community’s solidarity with tourists in distress.

These events collectively point to broader concerns over road safety and infrastructure in Quintana Roo’s tourist-heavy areas.
