Mexico City — The United States has intensified aerial surveillance over the Yucatan Peninsula, deploying drones and aircraft equipped to track submarines and monitor maritime activity in the Gulf of Mexico, according to a report published March 2, 2026.
The report by the magazine Proceso states that U.S. intelligence and reconnaissance aircraft have conducted more frequent operations off the coasts of Yucatan, Campeche, and Quintana Roo. This forms part of an effort to bolster surveillance in an area U.S. authorities consider strategically important due to potential threats and illicit operations.
The increased activity includes flights by drones and specialized aircraft capable of detecting underwater movements, as well as overflights in key maritime zones of the Gulf of Mexico. These operations have been observed in recent days by authorities and social media users.
The sustained presence of these U.S. surveillance platforms occurs in a regional context where international coordination on security and control of illegal activities has gained prominence. The report did not specify whether there is official communication with Mexican authorities regarding the operations.
Local and federal security officials in Mexico have not issued a public statement on the increase in aerial surveillance activities around the peninsula.
