Akumal, Quintana Roo — A massive influx of sargassum surprised the coast of Akumal on Thursday morning, prompting the rapid mobilization of over 150 local cooperatives and tourism service providers to clear the seaweed from the shoreline.
Tourism workers, guides, boat operators, and cooperative members began cleanup efforts early in the day along the beach to prevent the sargassum from accumulating in large quantities and disrupting recreational activities in the area.
Armed with shovels, rakes, and other manual tools, participants worked continuously at various points along the coast. The collective effort aimed to remove the seaweed before it decomposed, which could produce foul odors and affect the experience for visitors who daily flock to this site known for its clear waters and biodiversity.
The sudden arrival of sargassum raised concerns among those who directly depend on tourism in this part of the Riviera Maya, as Akumal is widely recognized for its natural wealth, particularly the presence of sea turtles that attract domestic and foreign tourists interested in sightings and snorkeling.
Service providers noted that such influxes can occur unexpectedly, emphasizing the importance of community organization to address the situation quickly and reduce its impact on the destination’s image.
They indicated that keeping beaches clean is crucial to preserving tourism activity and protecting the coastal ecosystem, on which many families in the community rely. Cleanup work continued for several hours with coordinated participation from cooperatives, maritime workers, and tourism operators.
