Washington, D.C. — Recent developments in United States national security policy point toward a potential expansion of its fight against drug trafficking on Mexican soil. The U.S. government, under the administration of Donald Trump, is studying the implementation of covert military operations aimed at dismantling organized crime structures in Mexico, without impacting the authority of the government of President Claudia Sheinbaum, differentiating this strategy from previous approaches in other countries.

Since the beginning of 2025, the United States has strengthened its legal framework to confront cartels, considering several Mexican organizations to be terrorist groups, which allows for a broader use of sanctions and military actions. The official designation of eight criminal organizations in February of that year was a crucial step in this strategy.

The projected deployment would include sending elite units and specialized agents, who would operate primarily using drones and other unmanned systems to locate and attack clandestine laboratories and drug trafficking leaders in specific zones of Mexico. Some of these operations require a ground presence and are planned in secret, with the character of covert operations under Title 50 authority, which implies a high level of autonomy and confidentiality.

Although a definitive decision has not yet been made, national and international sources indicate that coordination with intelligence agencies, such as the CIA, would be fundamental in these efforts, which seek to significantly reduce violence and illicit activity in the region. The U.S. government has emphasized that these actions are intended to reinforce the security of its citizens and reduce the flow of drugs across the shared border, without compromising Mexico's political stability.

This type of strategy represents a change in the United States' approach to fighting drug trafficking, prioritizing military and intelligence actions in a scenario that demands agility and precision, always within a framework of diplomatic cooperation.
