Blackwater Cozumel: Art Meets Ocean Science in New Exhibit

Photographs and videos from the Blackwater Cozumel underwater exhibition at Cozumel's Island Museum

Cozumel, Mexico — The Cozumel Parks and Museums Foundation (FPMC) inaugurated the “Blackwater Cozumel” exhibition at the Island Museum in 2026. The display combines art and science to reveal the ocean’s nocturnal life and promote environmental awareness.

The exhibition features underwater night photography and videos that unveil the ocean’s vastness and the diversity of species inhabiting its depths. It brings together the work of seven artists and scientists with close ties to the sea: Robert Stansfield, Frida Jonguitud, Pedro Valencia, Guillermo Reta, Jonathan Jarrell, Liesa Coates, and Kaitlyn Zuraff. Their images show underwater living beings rarely observed, captured during night dives.

The inauguration was attended by Juanita Alonso Marrufo, general director of the FPMC; Isela Carrillo Cupul, director of the Island Museum; councilor Alejandro Queb Franco; museographer Satoko Kitamura; the participating artists; and the public interested in art, science, and marine conservation.

Isela Carrillo emphasized that the exhibition includes 25 photographs and 29 underwater projections, creating an immersive visual experience that allows appreciation of the natural richness and diversity of marine life surrounding Cozumel. The exhibition stands as a pioneering experience in Mexico.

FPMC General Director Juanita Alonso Marrufo noted that the exhibition is part of the New Agreement for the Well-being and Development of Quintana Roo, aiming to bring the community closer to art and strengthen environmental awareness.

Diver Guillermo Reta thanked the opportunity to present his work, developed over more than four years.

The exhibition will be open to the public until February 24, offering an aesthetic and sensory experience that invites reflection on the fragility, beauty, and immensity of marine life hidden beneath the surface.
