Cancun, Quintana Roo — Two public transit routes will operate on the Nichupte Vehicular Bridge once it opens in the coming months, officials announced. The bridge will primarily transport workers to and from the Hotel Zone daily.
Rafael Hernández Kotasek, director of the Quintana Roo Institute of Mobility (Imoveqroo), said one route will start from Kabah Avenue, while the second will run through “Las Torres” in the city’s north.
The buses for these routes will be hybrid vehicles, measuring 10.5 meters long with a capacity for 70 passengers. They will travel along Kukulcan Boulevard from kilometer 8 to 23, bypassing the first stage of the Hotel Zone.
In total, 38 buses will enter service for these routes, to be selected and purchased by concession companies in the coming weeks.
“The idea is for service to begin when the bridge opens, but it must be a coordinated start with them; we set the specifications, and in this case, the Hotel Zone service is operated by a long-standing concessionaire. They make the choices, and we as authorities only set the accessibility, infrastructure, capacity, and technology conditions to prevent them from putting an 18- or 24-meter unit on the bridge later,” Hernández Kotasek added.
He noted that the bridge is expected to handle 14,000 to 15,000 people daily, with numbers likely to increase once the “Mobility for Well-being” (Mobi) project takes effect.
Hernández Kotasek emphasized that launching these routes marks a significant step toward modernizing and improving Cancun’s public transportation system.
“The start of these routes will mark the first step toward a more modern, efficient, and sustainable transportation model in Cancun, prioritizing people movement and strengthening mobility in one of the country’s most important tourist destinations,” he said.
