CHETUMAL, Mexico — A serious accident occurred in Chetumal in the early hours of Tuesday, September 16, leaving two people trapped after two vehicles collided on streets in the city's downtown colonia Centro.

According to reports, the drivers of a Volkswagen Gol and a Toyota Hilux were involved in a crash at the intersection of Benito Juárez and Plutarco Elías Calles streets in the capital of Quintana Roo. The violent collision resulted in two individuals becoming pinned inside their vehicles.

Following the impact, witnesses called emergency services. Authorities were required to use hydraulic rescue tools, commonly known as "jaws of life," to free the two trapped individuals from the gray Volkswagen Gol.

Once extracted, the two injured persons were transported to the Chetumal General Hospital for treatment of multiple wounds. While the injured were being transferred to the medical facility, Transit police officers cordoned off the area to await the removal of the vehicles to an impound lot, an effort intended to prevent another accident at the site.

The current health status of the injured remains unknown. It is also not yet clear which of the two drivers was responsible for the accident.

Other Incidents in the Quintana Roo Capital

While strong accidents like the one that occurred hours ago are not common in Chetumal, other incidents do happen. For example, a man lost his life after falling from a second story on the afternoon of Friday, August 22 of this year. He was allegedly painting when the incident occurred.

The event took place in the Fidel Velázquez neighborhood of the state capital. According to reports, the individual was painting on the second floor of a residence. The incident happened shortly after 5:00 pm at the intersection of Avenida 4 de Marzo and Tabí Street in Chetumal.

After the fall, an emergency call was placed to 911. Witnesses reported the man had suffered severe impact and was bleeding from his mouth and nose. Municipal Police officers and paramedics arrived at the scene, examined the individual, and confirmed he no longer had vital signs before departing.
