A courtroom scene in Cancún where two men were sentenced for murder

Cancún, Mexico — Two men have been sentenced to 37 years and six months in prison for the murder of a public servant in Cancún, the Quintana Roo State Prosecutor’s Office announced.

Israel Antonio Llarenas Villa and Raúl José Abreus Figueredo received the sentences during an oral trial hearing where prosecutors fully established their involvement in the January 2022 killing.

The court determined that the defendants lured the victim to a specific location in the city by claiming his previously stolen motorcycle was at a residence in the Paraíso Maya neighborhood’s Supermanzana 107. When the public servant arrived at the address to retrieve his vehicle, the assailants arrived in a car, subdued him, and shot him with a firearm restricted to military use.

According to the investigation, the victim received a message from an unknown number informing him about his motorcycle’s location.

After reviewing evidence presented by prosecutors, the judge imposed the prison sentence exceeding three decades and ordered the defendants to pay 874,722.32 pesos in material damages.
