Cozumel, Quintana Roo — The 2025 sea turtle nesting season has officially commenced in Quintana Roo following the discovery of the first loggerhead (Caretta caretta) nest at the Punta Sur Eco Park. The sighting marks the beginning of a months-long monitoring and conservation effort led by the Fundación de Parques y Museos de Cozumel (FPMC).

Conservation Efforts Underway

Biologist Rafael Chacón Díaz confirmed that teams of volunteers and technical personnel will patrol beaches across the region to identify, mark, and protect nesting sites for both loggerhead and green sea turtles (Chelonia mydas). The nesting season, which runs through October, is critical for the survival of these endangered species.

Preparations began earlier this year with beach cleanups to remove plastics and debris that could endanger nesting turtles or hatchlings. These efforts are part of a broader strategy to ensure a safe environment for the turtles’ reproductive cycle.

Community Involvement and Awareness

Chacón Díaz emphasized the importance of public awareness, noting that turtle nesting is not only an ecological milestone but also a significant tourist attraction that promotes environmental stewardship. The FPMC, which has over 35 years of experience in sea turtle conservation, is calling on local residents to volunteer and support protection efforts.

Authorities reiterated the need for visitors and residents to respect nesting zones and follow guidelines to minimize human impact on the fragile coastal ecosystem.

Earlier reports highlighted the negative effects of coastal dune fragmentation on turtle nesting in eastern Yucatán, underscoring the urgency of conservation measures.

The FPMC’s long-standing commitment to sea turtle protection has included successful hatchling releases, such as the 300 turtles recently freed at Playa Chen Río in Cozumel.
