Tulum collects 185 tons of sargassum in early 2026 season

Sargassum seaweed washed up on a beach in Tulum, Mexico

Tulum, Mexico — The Tulum municipal government has activated early actions to address sargassum arrival on the municipality’s coasts, following forecasts warning that the 2026 season could be similar to last year’s, considered one of the most intense.

Mayor Diego Castañón Trejo instructed strengthening coordinated work among the three levels of government, as well as with the private sector, with the goal of mitigating the environmental, tourist, and economic impacts of this natural phenomenon.

185 Tons of Sargassum Collected in Tulum

The general director of the Federal Maritime Zone (Zofemat) of Tulum, David Buchana, reported that so far this year, 185 tons of sargassum have been collected. This, he indicated, confirms an early and constant arrival of the seaweed.

Containers Placed in Hotel Zone and Public Access Points

Buchana explained that, as part of the preventive strategy, last week began the distribution of containers at various points in the Hotel Zone. Public beach access points were also cleaned, in order to facilitate the handling and proper disposal of collected sargassum.

“The mayor has emphasized to us the importance of anticipating the arrival of sargassum. Therefore, we began distributing containers to support hoteliers in managing the seaweed,” the official stated.

Call for Hoteliers to Assume Responsibility in Beach Cleaning

The head of Zofemat underscored that coordination among federal, state, and municipal authorities will be key to maintaining beaches in optimal conditions during the peak season of seaweed influx.

Shared Responsibility Between Government and Private Sector

He also considered it relevant that business owners with federal concessions actively contribute to cleaning the areas in front of their facilities.

“This effort is collective. It is fundamental that concessionaires utilize the containers that will be placed and fulfill the responsibility that corresponds to them,” he emphasized.

Tulum Prepares for a Sargassum Season Similar to 2025

With these actions, the Tulum municipal government reinforces its prevention and response strategy against massive sargassum arrival, a recurring phenomenon in the Mexican Caribbean. Authorities reiterated their willingness to maintain joint and permanent work, with the objective of protecting beaches, the environment, and tourist activity, fundamental pillars of the local economy.
