Tulum, Quintana Roo — The Tulum city government has fired about 30 municipal officials this year after uncovering alleged schemes in which employees acted as unauthorized brokers and false consultants to extract personal payments from residents.
Municipal Treasurer Raziel Ek said the dismissals followed investigations that identified employees offering consulting services, primarily through Facebook, for municipal procedures that can be handled directly at government offices. Some of these consultants monopolized certain departments, making it difficult for citizens to access services without paying under-the-table fees, Ek added.
The practices were detected across multiple departments, including Civil Protection and the Comptroller’s Office, though Ek said the problem was not limited to those areas and extended throughout the administration.
