Tulum, Mexico — Following the circulation of a video on social media showing security personnel allegedly engaging in inappropriate conduct with a minor on a Tulum beach, the municipal government launched an immediate investigation and suspended the officers involved.
Immediate Suspension and Investigation Ordered
Tulum Mayor Diego Castañón issued preventive suspensions for the implicated public safety officers to ensure a transparent investigation, emphasizing a zero-tolerance policy toward abuse. The municipal government and the Tulum DIF System (Integrated Family Development) confirmed that the minor is receiving specialized care from both the DIF and the Office for the Protection of Children and Adolescents. The child’s mother voluntarily approached authorities to seek institutional support.
In an official statement, authorities stressed that public service is a responsibility, not a privilege, and reiterated that Tulum does not tolerate abuse of power or misconduct. The government underscored its commitment to protecting children’s rights and human dignity.
Transparency and Community Values Reaffirmed
The municipal administration reaffirmed its dedication to social justice and community principles, stating, “Here, we govern with principles, with heart, and on the side of the people.” The statement made clear that any form of mistreatment, particularly involving minors, will not be permitted.
The incident, which involved a young artisan vendor being detained by police, sparked widespread outrage on social media. Authorities have pledged full transparency as the investigation continues.
