Trump Warns of Ground Attacks on Cartels in Mexico

President Donald Trump during an interview in the Oval Office

Washington, United States — President Donald Trump stated that ground attacks against drug cartels could affect “anywhere,” including Mexico, Central America, and South America, during an exclusive interview with the New York Post in the Oval Office.

“We know their routes. We know everything about them. We know their homes. We know everything about them. We are going to attack the cartels,” declared the president.

When questioned if those attacks could occur anywhere, even on Mexican, Venezuelan, and Colombian soil, the president responded: “It could be anywhere.”

The U.S. Department of Justice has accused, without presenting evidence, that most illicit drugs produced abroad and available in the United States are smuggled overland through borders with Mexico and, to a much lesser extent, with Canada.

The White House occupant boasted of having removed 97 percent of drugs entering by sea as a result of his military offensive against alleged drug trafficking operations in the Pacific and the Caribbean, and emphasized that he wants to see the same “success on land.”

The threat occurs in a context where the Trump administration has pressured the Mexican government to allow the entry of U.S. forces into its territory with the aim of “helping to curb drug trafficking.”

Earlier this month, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum rejected speculation that Trump could launch military attacks in her country against the cartels.

“I do not believe in an invasion; I do not even believe it is something they are taking very seriously,” declared Sheinbaum. “On several occasions, (Trump) has insisted that the U.S. army be allowed to enter Mexico. We have flatly refused, first because we defend our sovereignty and second because it is not necessary.”
