Mérida, Yucatán — The newly formed Tropical Cyclone "Erick," developing over the eastern Pacific Ocean, along with an approaching tropical wave, is expected to affect weather conditions across the Yucatán Peninsula. Meteorologist Juan Antonio Palma Solís, coordinator of Meteored México, explains the anticipated impacts and advises residents to prepare for increased rainfall and winds.
Tropical Wave to Bring Rainfall to the Region
An initial tropical wave moving south of the region is forecast to bring rain to the three peninsular states—Yucatán, Campeche, and Quintana Roo—on Tuesday, June 17. Simultaneously, this wave will be absorbed by Tropical Disturbance 94E, located south of Guatemala, which is likely to develop into Tropical Cyclone "Erick."
Effects of Tropical Cyclone "Erick" on the Yucatán Peninsula
By Wednesday, June 18, the circulation of the potential cyclone over the Pacific will draw significant moisture toward the peninsula, sustaining storm potential in the area. Forecasts indicate scattered moderate (5–25 mm) to heavy (25–50 mm) rainfall in Yucatán and Campeche, while Quintana Roo may experience lighter (less than 5 mm) to moderate (5–25 mm) showers.
"If you are caught outdoors during the rain, seek shelter immediately, as these downpours may be accompanied by frequent lightning and strong wind gusts," warns Palma Solís.
The cyclone’s expansive circulation will also increase cloud cover over the peninsula, keeping maximum temperatures below 40°C (104°F) through midweek. However, heat will remain noticeable, with highs ranging between 30°C (86°F) and 38°C (100°F).
Strong Winds Expected
A marked pressure difference between the developing Pacific cyclone and the Atlantic anticyclone will generate east-southeasterly wind gusts exceeding 55 km/h (34 mph) across Campeche, Yucatán, and Quintana Roo, particularly on Tuesday and Wednesday. Mariners are advised to monitor conditions for potential restrictions.
Rainfall is expected to become more scattered by Thursday and Friday as the cyclone makes landfall over Oaxaca and Guerrero.
Additional Tropical Wave Approaching
A new tropical wave is projected to reach the western Caribbean and Central America by Friday, arriving in the Yucatán Peninsula on Saturday. This system, combined with the "Maya Trough," will maintain storm potential through the weekend. Another wave may follow early next week.
Palma Solís urges residents to stay updated on weather developments, as he will continue providing real-time updates via social media.
