Tulum, Quintana Roo — In a bid to enhance connectivity across Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula, Tren Maya has rolled out a new intermodal transportation system designed to bridge the gap between its railway stations and key urban hubs, Pueblos Mágicos (Magical Towns), and major tourist destinations. The initiative, announced via the company’s official social media channels, aims to provide travelers with a seamless, cost-effective way to explore the region.

A Structured, Affordable Transit Solution

The newly launched system employs a fleet of buses and vans to shuttle passengers between Tren Maya stations and nearby city centers—many of which are located at a considerable distance from the rail line. One of the first routes to go live serves Izamal, Yucatán, transporting visitors directly from the train station to the heart of the famed “Yellow City,” a Pueblo Mágico known for its colonial charm and ancient Mayan ruins.

Fares remain budget-friendly, with prices varying by destination. According to Tren Maya’s published rates, trips from stations to:

  • Bacalar cost 25 pesos (~$1.50 USD)
  • Tulum Airport run 35 pesos (~$2 USD)
  • Cancún, Tulum Pueblo, and Playa del Carmen are priced at 55 pesos (~$3.30 USD) each

Buses and vans depart hourly, allowing travelers to better schedule their commutes and optimize their time exploring the region.

Driving Sustainable and Inclusive Tourism

Beyond convenience, the intermodal system is positioned as a tool for economic and tourism development in lesser-visited areas. In a statement, Tren Maya emphasized that the initiative not only lowers travel costs but also encourages exploration beyond traditional hotspots, distributing tourist traffic more evenly and supporting local economies in underserved communities.

“This model fosters more sustainable and inclusive tourism by connecting travelers with emerging destinations while reducing reliance on private transportation,” the company noted.

Future Expansion: Passenger and Freight Upgrades

Looking ahead, Tren Maya has announced plans to construct dedicated intermodal terminals in strategic locations, including Palenque (Chiapas) and Chetumal (Quintana Roo), further integrating rail, bus, and other transit options to strengthen regional mobility.

Simultaneously, the company is advancing its freight transport operations, leveraging the same rail infrastructure to move cargo efficiently. Specialized intermodal terminals are in development to facilitate smooth transfers between trains and trucks—a move expected to boost commercial logistics across southeastern Mexico.

What This Means for Travelers

For visitors, the new system simplifies access to Tulum’s beaches, Bacalar’s lagoon, and the cultural gems of Izamal—all without the hassle of renting a car or navigating fragmented transit options. As Tren Maya continues to expand, the intermodal network could redefine travel in the region, making it easier than ever to experience the Yucatán’s rich landscapes, history, and culture.
