Cancún, Quintana Roo — Tourists who rent vehicles from unregulated agencies in Quintana Roo face wrongful charges, legal conflicts, and even arrests for driving cars reported stolen, warned the president of the Quintana Roo Vehicle Rental Association, Alma Reynoso Zambrano. She urged visitors to avoid such services, especially during peak vacation periods.
Reynoso Zambrano said complaints from people who rent cars from unauthorized companies increase during high-traffic seasons, leading to financial losses and adverse legal situations.
She noted one of the most serious scenarios occurs when users are intercepted by authorities while driving stolen vehicles, without prior knowledge of their status.
She explained these cases mainly originate when customers choose lower rates offered by companies operating outside formal regulations, which increases the risk of irregularities.
Although the costs may seem attractive, the consequences can involve higher expenses or legal complications, she emphasized.
Given this situation, she recommended contracting only with established firms, preferably affiliated with formal organizations.
She also insisted on verifying that vehicles have valid insurance, checking the physical condition of the unit before use, and clarifying all charges included in the service beforehand.
Authorities recommended consulting the Commercial Bureau of the Federal Consumer Protection Agency (Profeco), a tool that allows users to review companies’ complaint histories and detect possible anomalies before finalizing a contract.
Reynoso Zambrano stressed that the choice should not be based solely on price, but on legal certainty and the security conditions offered by the rental company.
She noted that resorting to options outside the regulated framework exposes visitors to situations that can affect their stay and legal status.
The recommendation is to verify companies’ legality and prioritize services that meet established requirements, to avoid incidents stemming from irregular practices in the sector.
