Tulum, Quintana Roo — A motorcyclist was injured after being struck by a car driven by tourists who, according to witnesses, failed to obey a stop sign at a busy intersection in downtown Tulum. The accident occurred in a high-traffic area, prompting local residents to call for improved signage and increased traffic enforcement.
Incident at a Busy Intersection
The crash occurred at the intersection of Polar Poniente and Saturno Norte streets, located just meters from a local church. According to a preliminary report, a white Chevrolet Aveo, with license plates from the state of Baja California, proceeded into the intersection without stopping and collided with a motorcycle that had the right of way.
The impact caused material damage to both vehicles. The car sustained dents and detached parts on its right side, while the motorcycle, with license plate 55WMM5, was left lying on the pavement with visible damage to its rear and side.
The adult male motorcyclist received on-site treatment from Red Cross paramedics for bumps and abrasions. His injuries did not require transport to a hospital. Officers from the State Police arrived at the scene to conduct the corresponding forensic investigation, file the incident report, and coordinate the removal of the vehicles to reestablish normal traffic flow.
Residents Cite Recurring Problem
Residents of the area indicated that accidents are frequent at this intersection, citing that many drivers ignore the stop signs despite the constant flow of pedestrians and motorcyclists.
"There have been several crashes here already. What's needed is more surveillance or a speed bump, because tourists and some locals just don't stop," commented one local resident.
Traffic authorities urged all drivers, especially visitors, to respect traffic laws and speed limits, reminding the public that downtown Tulum is a high-mobility area with significant risks for pedestrians.
