Cancún, Mexico — Agents from the Directorate of Transit and the Institute of Mobility are accused of targeting drivers without justification, allegedly to extract bribes.
On social media, some citizens stated that inspectors from the Institute of Mobility began detaining private vehicles to check documents. While it was not mentioned that they ask for money, it is not within their authority to do so unless they are public service units and are verifying that their documents are in order.
Both situations have caused annoyance among the public, including national tourists who have been stopped up to twice a day for having a rental car and were asked for 300 pesos or more.
A family that arrived from Querétaro to Cancún to vacation for a few days had bad experiences since the Monday they arrived, with Transit elements who have stopped them up to three times in one day under various pretexts.
On social media, some citizens agreed that state Mobility personnel are “setting up” checkpoints, playing at being Transit agents and usurping functions to check documents of private vehicles.
