Cozumel, Quintana Roo, January 8, 2026 — Recent sinkings of tourist boats in Cozumel have raised alarms among sector operators, who denounced growing impunity stemming from a lack of sanctions and effective oversight by maritime authorities.

Members of the nautical community pointed out that, following these incidents, most affected tourists do not file formal complaints, either due to lack of knowledge, administrative barriers, or because they consider the events isolated experiences before leaving the destination.

This absence of legal procedures, even when material losses and direct risks to life are recorded, allows allegedly responsible owners and captains to resume operations within days, without facing consequences or correcting mechanical or safety failures.

César Zepeda, a member of the National Association of Tourist Aquatic Operators, warned that this institutional omission fosters unsafe practices, weakens confidence in Cozumel’s nautical tourism, and exposes both national and international visitors.

The sector representative called on the Port Captaincy and federal authorities to reinforce permanent surveillance, conduct exhaustive inspections, and rigorously apply the law, including the immediate suspension of vessels and licenses when irregularities are detected.

He emphasized that maritime safety should not depend on tourists’ willingness to report, but on preventive and punitive action that guarantees responsible and safe operations in one of the country’s main tourist destinations.
