3 Arrested in Cozumel for Homicide, Drug Crimes

Cozumel, Mexico — The State Attorney General’s Office announced the arrest of three individuals allegedly part of a criminal cell responsible for violence in Cozumel. The suspects are accused of involvement in robbery, drug sales, and homicide.

Details of the Arrest

The detainees were apprehended near the Cuzamil neighborhood, where authorities seized firearms, magazines, and marijuana. The individuals were identified as:

  • Francisco Javier, 33, originally from Michoacán
  • Josías, 22
  • Joana, 22

At the time of their arrest, officers recovered:

  • Two 9mm firearms, each with loaded magazines containing 11 live rounds
  • Packets of marijuana

Criminal Operations and Payments

According to Attorney General Raciel López Salazar, the suspects received monthly payments ranging from 2,000 to 16,000 pesos for their participation in criminal activities. Their operations primarily included:

  • Drug trafficking
  • Robberies
  • Violent acts across the island

Connection to Homicide

Investigators linked the suspects to the murder of Jorge Alberto, alias “El Randall”, which occurred on July 1 in an apartment in the Emiliano Zapata neighborhood.

Incident Details:

  • The victim was at home with his partner when four armed individuals forced entry.
  • The assailants beat him and demanded money.
  • After stealing 30,000 pesos, one attacker ordered his execution, shooting him in the head with a 7.65mm firearm.

Authorities believe “El Randall” was also involved in drug trafficking and belonged to a rival criminal group, which may have motivated the attack.

The three suspects were formally charged and remanded to preventive detention for two years while investigations continue. They face charges for:

  • Aggravated homicide
  • Drug trafficking
  • Possession of firearms restricted for military use

The case remains under investigation as authorities work to dismantle further criminal networks in the region.
