Three alleged incidents of sexual harassment in Playa del Carmen schools have been reported to the relevant authorities. The reports were made by concerned parents who sought guidance from the municipal Department of Education.
Javier Basulto Campos, the municipal director of Education, stated that his department's role is to provide information and advice to families regarding the reporting process. He clarified that both public and private educational institutions have a protocol for handling cases of sexual harassment against minors. Depending on the circumstances, cases are referred to the State Attorney General or the appropriate agency. "We are merely facilitators of information, and the actions taken depend on the specifics of the case," he reiterated.
Campos also commented on the recent alleged sexual abuse case involving a teacher and a 12-year-old student at St. Patrick School in Puerto Aventuras. He confirmed that an investigation has been initiated and that the evidence is currently being reviewed.
In other news, Campos announced the start of the summer vacation period for 53,000 elementary level students from various schools. He noted that Public Security will be patrolling the schools to prevent vandalism during the break, and urged local residents to report any suspicious activity on school grounds. He recalled that there was a significant increase in vandalism during the pandemic, but that this has been decreasing thanks to the combined efforts of security forces, the public, and school staff.
