Three candidates have officially registered to compete for the role of Mayor in Puerto Aventuras, a town within the municipality of Solidaridad. The candidates, who have all met the necessary registration requirements, were granted their certificates to participate in the election slated for Sunday, December 15. The candidates are Graciela Isabel Moreno, Damaris del Carmen Ortega, and the incumbent mayor, Gilberto Gómez.
Moreno represents the White slate, Ortega is running for the Dark Brown slate, and Gómez is seeking re-election for the Golden slate. Their respective campaigns kicked off on Thursday, December 5, and will run until Wednesday, December 11. During this period, they will have the opportunity to engage with their constituents and convince them of their suitability for the role of mayor.
Based on previous election figures, it is estimated that between 2,000 and 3,000 people could turn up to vote at the three polling stations that will be set up at the mayor's office. The staff of the Electoral Institute of Quintana Roo (Ieqroo) has been trained to manage the process. The election day will take place on Sunday, December 15, from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
Of the three candidates, Ortega has made the boldest claims, criticizing incumbent mayor Gómez for failing to meet the population's needs regarding the development of the mayor's office. She alleges that Gómez has allowed and even encouraged irregular land invasions in the area.
Gómez, on the other hand, is confident about his re-election prospects. He has previously delivered Puerto Aventuras to the party that now supports him for the victory of the current municipal president in Solidaridad. Gómez's campaign is notably aligned with the current administration of Solidaridad, using the same colors, slogans, and logos, as well as the same promotional spaces.
Ortega appears to have the most public support of the three candidates, particularly from the population of Puerto Aventuras and the development of Puerto Maya. However, many believe that incumbent mayor Gómez is unlikely to relinquish his position easily, given his political backing. The final decision will be revealed at the ballot boxes, whether it is the choice of the people or the result of political maneuvering by a party known for imposing its decisions on key political figures.
