Chetumal, Quintana Roo — Since the initiation of procedures, technical glitches have been occurring in the automated software system used for collecting biometric data for the issuance of the CURP at the offices of the Civil Registry of Othón P. Blanco, although this has not led to a suspension of the service for attention and registration.
Director Hugo Rojas Vázquez explained that they began a pilot testing phase last month with a good response from citizens, but due to errors detected in the program developed for facial biometrics and citizen authentication, specialized technology personnel have been dedicated to reviewing the platform to resolve these inconsistencies and improve it.
“These are technical failures detected in the platform for the implementation of the biometric CURP system, such as data not loading properly or the inability to quickly link to other official platforms,” Rojas Vázquez stated. “It is important to remember that the Secretariat of the Interior, through the National Population Registry (Renapo), is responsible for administering the national biometric database, but staff from the state and municipal civil registry are already addressing these failures that occurred during the testing phase, so that we can officially start possibly in January.”
He emphasized that the enabled system allows for biometric identity validation and includes security protocols, security locks, and even audits to protect the data, thereby complying with the General Law on the Protection of Personal Data.
The biometric CURP, which is an official identification document, stores fingerprints, iris, electronic signature, and face of each inhabitant through photography and has been classified by the Federal Government as a tool to combat corruption and search for missing persons, making it essential for the system to operate at 100% without any failures.
“It is important to recall that the program is part of a national strategy to strengthen security in person identification by incorporating biometric data, such as iris and fingerprints, which is why it is crucial for it to function optimally, especially when the system is opened to citizens; for now, we are waiting for the process to be reactivated once its operation is guaranteed,” he added.
He mentioned that the implementation of the CURP with biometric data began on October 16 and is expected that by February 2026, all modules in the country will be capable of managing it.
