This Friday morning saw hundreds of teachers from across Quintana Roo, Mexico, taking to the streets in protest against changes to the ISSSTE Law, a reform pushed by the federal government of Claudia Sheinbaum. The teachers' protest included a blockade of the federal highway at the southern entrance of Playa del Carmen, causing significant traffic disruptions.
The protest began at 8:00 AM, with the group assembling in Plaza 28 de Julio. They then proceeded along Calle 8 and Avenida 30, reaching Centro Maya, where they temporarily blocked the federal road. Although the protesters eventually cleared the road, they warned that their demonstrations would continue unless their demands were met.
Carlos Israel Pech Moreno, president of the Central Fight Committee in Cozumel, stated that if no solutions were found, the suspension of classes across the state would continue into the next week. Currently, around 200 schools in Playa del Carmen are inactive due to the teachers' protest, which was joined on Friday by staff from the College of Bachelors, CONALEP, and the General Hospital.
The teachers have announced plans to extend their protest to Cancun, where they intend to block the hotel zone, thereby increasing pressure on the authorities.
The teachers view the proposed changes to the ISSSTE Law as a threat to their labor rights, and they are determined to continue their protest until their voices are heard.
