Eliazar Sagrero Ordoñez, the head of the Caribbean Sharks taxi union, is seeking legal protection against alleged acts of torture and incommunicado detention. Despite being granted a suspension against potential acts of this nature, Sagrero Ordoñez will remain in custody at the General State Prosecutor's Office in Tulum until he appears before a judge.
On August 29th, the Prosecutor's Office issued an arrest warrant for Sagrero Ordoñez. He is suspected of committing aggravated murder and attempted murder against four individuals, whose identities have been kept confidential.
In response, Sagrero Ordoñez's defense team filed a habeas corpus lawsuit with the Ninth District Court. According to court documents, he was granted a suspension, which means he cannot be held incommunicado or subjected to torture. The court's decision was made public on Friday.
In protest of Sagrero Ordoñez's arrest, around 400 taxi drivers from the Caribbean Sharks union blocked the entrance to Tulum. The blockade caused significant traffic delays and frustration for other drivers needing to travel to Playa del Carmen, Cancún, or Chetumal. The protesters demanded the release of Sagrero Ordoñez, who remains the union leader and a councilor in Tulum, despite his arrest for alleged involvement in the murder of four people and other crimes.
The protesters claim that Sagrero Ordoñez's arrest is an act of repression against their union. "We are here demanding justice and Eliazar's release. This arrest is an act of repression against our union and we are not going to allow it. This is a clear sign that they want to silence us. But we are not going to give up," they stated.
Tulum is currently experiencing a surge in homicides, many of which involve taxi drivers and the use of illegal substances. It is anticipated that Sagrero Ordoñez's legal situation will be updated soon, with indications that he may be charged with homicide and held in preventive detention as a precautionary measure.
