Chetumal, Quintana Roo — A taxi driver in Chetumal endured a harrowing ordeal early Saturday morning after being robbed at knifepoint and locked inside the trunk of his own vehicle by two assailants. The incident has heightened concerns over the safety of transportation workers in the region, where attacks on taxi drivers have become increasingly frequent.
A Predawn Ambush
The attack occurred around 4:40 a.m. on Ramón F. Iturbe Street, between Marciano González and Insurgentes. According to authorities, the assailants initially posed as passengers in need of gasoline, luring the driver—operating taxi number 1605—into a false sense of security. Once inside the vehicle, they brandished a knife, stole 800 pesos in cash and the driver’s cellphone, then forced him into the trunk.
Alerted by neighbors who noticed the taxi’s lights on and unusual noises coming from the trunk, municipal police arrived at the scene. Officers discovered the driver trapped inside and freed him. Though physically unharmed, the victim was visibly shaken by the experience.
Investigation Underway
Authorities have opened an investigation into the robbery but have yet to make any arrests. The case underscores growing fears among local taxi operators, who face rising threats of violence while on the job.
The driver recounted that the suspects had initially approached him near a bar on Marciano González and Calzada Veracruz before carrying out the assault. Despite the traumatic event, no injuries were reported.
Calls for Increased Security
The incident has sparked renewed calls for enhanced safety measures to protect taxi drivers in Chetumal. Local officials have not yet announced any specific actions in response to the attack.
Residents and transportation workers alike are urging authorities to address the escalating insecurity, as similar robberies continue to plague the region.
