The recent summer season was not as successful as hoped for some of Mexico's most popular tourist destinations. This downturn was largely due to the ongoing conflicts between traditional taxi drivers and drivers for digital platforms.
Tourists, both domestic and international, have frequently reported negative experiences with taxi drivers in Cancun, Playa del Carmen, and Tulum. These drivers have been known to threaten, harass, and even assault operators working for digital platforms, who are not part of the taxi union. Social media is rife with images and videos of taxi drivers attacking private drivers who are transporting customers.
These incidents have understandably upset visitors, leading many to avoid using local transportation services altogether. Numerous media outlets and consulting firms have noted that for the first time in many years, popular beach destinations like Cancun, Playa del Carmen, and Tulum have dropped off the list of most sought-after destinations for domestic tourism.
This ongoing issue has also impacted departures from Cancun International Airport. The once-popular tourist sites in Quintana Roo have been replaced by other favored destinations such as Nuevo Vallarta, Puerto Vallarta, Los Cabos, and emerging beaches in Yucatan like Puerto Progreso and Sisal. Solidaridad, another popular destination, has also suffered due to its inability to offer competitive prices in the national market.
