Tulum Extortion Suspect Detained After Bullet Threat

Tulum, Quintana Roo — A control judge has formally ordered a suspect identified as Alex "N" to stand trial for his alleged involvement in an aggravated extortion case in Tulum. The ruling came after the Quintana Roo State Attorney General's Office (FGE) presented sufficient evidence to support the charges.

Demand for "Right to Operate" Payment

According to the investigation, on October 16 of this year, the accused went to the parking lot of a business located at kilometer 239 of Federal Highway 307, on the Playa del Carmen–Tulum stretch. At that location, he approached an employee and handed him a bullet along with an extortion note demanding a monthly payment of 30,000 pesos as a "right to operate" fee.

Arrest in Playa del Carmen

Following a complaint filed by the victim, the Specialized Prosecutor's Office Combating Kidnapping and Extortion Crimes requested and obtained an arrest warrant. The warrant was executed on Zapote Street, between Ceiba and Caoba, in the Misión Villamar subdivision in Playa del Carmen.

During the hearing, the judge ruled to formally charge the accused and imposed the precautionary measure of preventive detention. This measure will remain in effect for the duration of the judicial process.

The FGE reiterated that it maintains firm actions against crimes that affect the security of families and the productive sector of Quintana Roo.
