Cozumel, Quintana Roo — A contingent of 50 to 60 personnel from the Mexican Army, Navy, National Guard, State Police, and Municipal Police entered the Cozumel Social Reintegration Center (Cereso) to conduct an inspection operation inside the prison.
According to versions from relatives of incarcerated individuals, the intervention was led by the prison’s administrative personnel, under the direction of Jetzael Martínez Cisneros, whom they accuse of allegedly being unaware of what occurs inside the facility despite his administrative responsibility.
The complainants asserted that this type of operation typically reveals deficiencies in the prison’s internal control, since, despite official reports of normalcy, inspections are usually carried out with a considerable deployment of security forces.
At the time, no authority had officially informed about the specific objective of the operation or about possible findings inside the penitentiary center.
As usually happens, it is expected that the Secretariat of Citizen Security or the institution that promoted the intervention will later issue a bulletin detailing the results of the inspection and whether prohibited objects or other irregularities were seized.
