Cancún, Mexico — Violence again shook the urban area of Cancún after a street vendor and a woman were shot in Supermanzana 254, within the La Joya subdivision, allegedly for refusing to pay so-called "derecho de piso," or extortion fees.

According to initial reports, the attack occurred on Wednesday night when armed individuals arrived at the location where the merchant was selling his products. The aggressors demanded payment of a fee; however, upon receiving a refusal, they fired repeatedly, leaving two people injured.

One of the victims, a woman who was near the point of sale, sustained a gunshot wound to the buttocks, while the vendor presented multiple injuries from a projectile from a firearm.

Paramedics from a private company responded to the scene and transported the injured woman to the General Hospital, where she remains under medical observation.

The attack site was cordoned off by elements of the Municipal Police, the National Guard, and the Ministerial Police, who carried out the initial procedures and collected ballistic evidence. As of now, no arrests have been reported in connection with these events.

The Attorney General's Office of the State of Quintana Roo reported that an investigation file has been opened for the crimes of injuries with a firearm and extortion, due to the possible relationship of the attack with illegal collections from street vendors.

Residents of the La Joya subdivision expressed their concern about the increase in these violent acts and requested increased police surveillance to guarantee security in the area.
