Playa del Carmen Storm Operation Tackles Flooding

Playa del Carmen, QR — Mayor Estefanía Mercado Asencio supervised cleaning work on drains and sewers in several neighborhoods of Playa del Carmen as part of the city's Storm Operation. During the tour, she verified that work is being carried out to facilitate the flow of water accumulated from recent rains and to keep roadways open.

The Secretary of Civil Protection, Risk Prevention, and Firefighters, Darwin Covarrubias Góngora, stated that the operation involves 140 personnel and resources such as drones, pick-up trucks, water tankers, rapid response vehicles, and ambulances, with the goal of responding immediately to any eventuality, according to the official bulletin.

Covarrubias Góngora reported that to date, 256 storm drains have been attended to and desilting has been performed on 34 absorption wells at strategic points throughout the city. Furthermore, he specified that 49 temporary shelters have been activated, organized in three opening phases, with a minimum capacity for 7,215 people and a maximum for 12,000, including pet friendly spaces. Additionally, there are 39 self-shelters with a capacity for 33,874 people, available for category 1 and 2 hurricanes or during evacuations indicated by Civil Protection based on the magnitude of the phenomenon, as per the official bulletin.

Neighborhoods with Flooding Receive Attention from Storm Operation in Playa

From the Civil Protection Command Center, Mayor Mercado Asencio indicated that areas with flooding have been identified in neighborhoods such as Villamar I, Misión del Carmen, Plaza Las Américas, Luis Donaldo Colosio, Palmas I and II, and La Guadalupana, where drainage and cleaning efforts will be reinforced.

The Storm Operation supervision tour also included a review of the work carried out by the Municipal Public Services Secretariat, Civil Protection, and Firefighters, in coordination to attend to the areas at highest risk from rains and meteorological phenomena, the bulletin details.

Mercado Asencio highlighted the importance of citizens staying informed and heeding official recommendations, inviting them to join Civil Protection actions for collective safety.

During Rains, City Maintains Alert with Monitoring from Storm Operation

The operations are carried out permanently, but during the rainy season the Storm Operation is activated, with a preventive focus to address possible damage and maintain control of flooding and vehicular traffic in the city.

The operation's personnel remain on alert, with constant monitoring of critical areas, supervision of drains and absorption wells, and coordination with temporary and self-shelters, ensuring the availability of human and material resources for any emergency.
