State Prosecutor’s Office Rules Out Direct Attack on Investigators in Cancun, Arrests Suspect After Chase
Cancun, Quintana Roo — The armed attack that occurred Wednesday on Huayacan Avenue was not a direct assault on state police investigators but an attempt to kill a civilian, the State Prosecutor’s Office (FGE) said.
In a statement, the FGE said the victim was inside a vehicle when gunmen opened fire. At that moment, investigators were nearby conducting field work and intervened, pursuing one of the suspects and making an arrest.
During the chase, a police investigator was struck by a vehicle and injured. Officials said his condition is stable and he is out of danger.
Authorities seized a handgun, a motorcycle, and a helmet. Inside the vehicle linked to the incident, they found several packages containing substances resembling narcotics, which were also confiscated and turned over to prosecutors for drug-dealing investigations.
The detained suspect and all evidence have been placed at the disposal of the Public Prosecutor’s Office to open a formal investigation.
