Cozumel, Quintana Roo — The San Martín Turtle Camp has reported the arrival of the first sea turtles of the season, with six nests already registered as of May 8, 2025. The early nesting season began on April 26, when the first nest was detected, signaling what officials anticipate could be a steady season for turtle arrivals.
Early Arrival of Loggerhead Turtles
Noel Rivas Camop, Subdirector of Ecology, confirmed that the first nest belongs to the Caretta caretta species, commonly known as the Loggerhead Turtle. While their arrival is typical for this time of year, their nesting numbers are generally lower compared to the Chelonia mydas (Green or White Turtle). Authorities have prioritized monitoring the Loggerhead population this season while ensuring the protection of other species.
Increased Vigilance Against Threats
Rivas Camop noted that during the previous season, approximately 200 Loggerhead nests were recorded and closely monitored. Many of these nests were situated near water currents or wave breaks, increasing the risk of egg loss.
“Last season, we registered around 200 Loggerhead nests, which required constant vigilance. Turtles sometimes build their nests near water currents or where waves break, which can lead to the loss of all eggs. This demands heightened surveillance,” he said.
To mitigate risks, the camp has intensified efforts, including recruiting additional volunteers to safeguard nests from natural predators and human interference.
Combating Illegal Consumption
Despite progress in conservation, the illegal consumption of sea turtle meat, eggs, and byproducts remains a concern in Cozumel. While direct human predation has not been detected this season, authorities emphasize the need for continued enforcement to protect both Loggerhead and Green Turtles during their nesting period.
The nesting zone has already been secured, with marked areas to guide conservation efforts. Volunteers remain essential in ensuring the safety of these endangered species throughout the season.
