Puerto Morelos, Quintana Roo — The 9th edition of the International Women’s Sport Fishing Tournament La Diosa del Mar concluded successfully, with 28 boats competing and a prize pool close to 600,000 pesos (about $30,000 USD), solidifying its status as a key sports tourism event in Puerto Morelos.
Mayor Blanca Merari Tziu Muñoz gave the starting signal and highlighted that the tournament, considered unique of its kind nationwide, boosts the destination’s tourism promotion and encourages women’s participation in sport fishing.
The competition promoted responsible fishing practices, emphasizing catch-and-release of species such as blue marlin, white marlin, and sailfish, as well as the release of juvenile dorado as part of marine conservation efforts.
At the awards ceremony, led by Sustainable Tourism Secretary Karina Vázquez Díaz on behalf of the mayor, the team Sirenas del Caribe took first place with 6,600 points after releasing a blue marlin. The winning team received a prize of 100,000 pesos and four passes for a sport fishing experience in Panama.
Second place went to Perlas del Caribe/Black Moon, while Las Fragatas/Marlin finished third, notable for releasing eight juvenile dorado.
Municipal authorities said the tournament reaffirms Puerto Morelos as a sports tourism destination, boosts the local economy, and strengthens sustainable practices focused on marine species conservation.
