Quintana Roo, Mexico — The Secretariat of Public Education (SEP) has announced modifications to the academic calendar for the 2025-2026 school year, granting teachers an additional week of vacation. The decision, endorsed by President Claudia Sheinbaum, aims to compensate educators for administrative work performed outside school hours.
Extended Summer Break for Teachers
Mario Delgado Carrillo, head of the SEP, confirmed in an interview with Heraldo Televisión that the summer vacation period will be extended. Instead of resuming classes in the last week of August, the 2025-2026 academic year will begin in the first week of September.
"The President believes teachers deserve greater rest and recognition," Delgado stated. The announcement was made on May 15 during celebrations for Teachers' Day.
Salary Increase Confirmed
Delgado Carrillo also reaffirmed the federal government’s commitment to salary recovery for educators, a policy initiated under former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador. Teachers will receive a 9% pay raise, which will increase to 10% starting in September.
Impact on Students and Families
The adjusted calendar will benefit not only teachers but also students, who will gain additional days of rest before returning to school. The change applies nationwide, including Quintana Roo, where parents are already preparing for the end of the 2024-2025 academic year.
The SEP emphasized that the measure reflects ongoing efforts to improve working conditions for educators while maintaining academic standards. Further details on the revised calendar will be released in the coming months.
