Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — A woman injured in a March 3 bus crash on Highway 307 has died after 24 days in hospital, becoming the second fatality from the collision involving a Del Valle company bus.
Yocelin Estrada Núñez, 36, succumbed to her injuries on Friday night after being hospitalized since the accident. She had been transferred to the IMSS (Mexican Social Security Institute) hospital in Playa del Carmen on Wednesday as her condition worsened.
The crash occurred near the Grand Oasis hotel when a Del Valle bus driver allegedly fell asleep, veered into the shoulder, and struck a parked Sabritas delivery truck. The impact knocked down a utility pole and sparked a fire.
The truck’s driver, Ginger Mariel Arana Peña, who also worked as a Red Cross paramedic, died instantly. Estrada, who was driving another truck but was standing and talking with Arana Peña at the time, sustained serious injuries.
Hospital staff notified Estrada’s family and the State Prosecutor’s Office of her death. The bus driver was already detained following the first fatality.
