The Ministry of Agricultural, Rural and Fisheries Development (Sedarpe) has confirmed a total of ten cases of screwworm infection in Quintana Roo. The ministry is working closely with local cattle farmers to provide necessary treatments and monitor the situation daily to quickly address any new cases.

Jorge Aguilar Osorio, a representative from Sedarpe, stated that the cases are primarily concentrated in the municipalities of Othón P. Blanco and Bacalar. Six cases were reported in Othón P. Blanco and four in Bacalar, with the former seeing a higher rate of infection.

Osorio emphasized the importance of cattle farmers closely monitoring their livestock for any signs of wounds. The ministry has provided farmers with preventive kits, which include medication to eliminate any remaining larvae after treatment and a healing accelerator to prevent re-infection.

Osorio also highlighted the importance of proper care for newborn calves, particularly ensuring that their navels are properly healed to prevent larvae from entering and causing infection.

Sedarpe continues to collaborate with the National Health, Safety and Agrifood Quality Service (Senasica) and various livestock associations, not only in Quintana Roo but also in neighboring states of Yucatán and Campeche. The aim is to ensure optimal health conditions for cattle and prevent the transportation of sick animals that could pose a risk to healthy ones.

In case of a suspected infection, Osorio explained that the procedure is straightforward. Farmers simply need to call the service number and a veterinarian will visit the ranch to take a sample and confirm or dismiss the presence of an infection.
