Ana Paty Peralta, the municipal president of Benito Juárez, has made it clear that taxi drivers from the "Andrés Quintana Roo" Union need to accept competition in the transport service sector. She stated that monopolies should not exist in this industry.
The statement comes in response to the recent arrests of three taxi drivers from Puerto Morelos. The drivers were apprehended for intimidating a tourist who chose to use Uber. Peralta expressed her frustration, noting that despite numerous attempts to engage in dialogue with the union to prevent such incidents, the efforts have not been successful.
Peralta insisted that the taxi drivers need to understand that their actions are not only detrimental to the government but also to the city and its residents. She emphasized, "There is enough for everyone, there should always be competition, and if they are not addressing it, it is very bad."
Peralta assured that her government will continue to collaborate with the state administration to penalize any acts of aggression by taxi drivers against alternative transportation services.
She also urged the public to report any aggressive behavior by drivers from the "Andrés Quintana Roo" Union. She emphasized the importance of taking action and the role of videos and photos in documenting these incidents.
In other news, Peralta announced that Cancún will be the venue for the upcoming National Congress of Mayors of Mexico, scheduled for February 6 to 10. The event will see participation from 20 mayors from various regions, including Mexico City, Baja California, Nuevo León, Guadalajara, and Veracruz.
The congress will focus on a variety of topics, including best practices in administration and the development of public policies.
