Sargazo Surge: Quintana Roo’s 91K Ton Season

Chetumal, QR — The 2025 sargazo season in Quintana Roo concluded with more than 91,000 tons collected, representing an increase of 147.31 percent compared to 2024.

The Secretary of Ecology and Environment (Sema) released the 2025 Sargasso Report, compiled with data from the Federal Maritime Terrestrial Zone Directorate (Zofemat) of the municipalities, the Secretary of the Navy (Semar), and the Collector Network.

According to the report, Quintana Roo closed the 2025 sargazo season—with a cutoff date of October 31—with an accumulated 91,505.97 tons of the macroalgae. Last year, according to state government information, 37,000 tons were collected from the state's coasts and beaches.

The 2025 figure is equivalent to 147.31 percent more than that of 2024, meaning an additional 54,505.97 tons. Although the sargazo season has concluded, the macroalgae continues to arrive on the state's coasts, albeit in smaller quantities.

In October, the influx decreased by more than 50 percent compared to September. The month with the greatest volume was July.

Municipalities with the Highest Accumulation in the 2025 Sargazo Season

  • September: 12,085.73 tons

In October, the registered quantity was 5,660.46 tons, while in the first three days of November, 276.11 tons were counted. The total sum of the macroalgae in the state until November 3 is 91,182.08 tons.

The Semar reported that sargazo is a brown macroalgae of the genus Sargassum, whose arrival on the coasts of the Mexican Caribbean is a periodic natural phenomenon and not exclusive to Mexico. The season began on April 1, 2025, and concluded on October 31.
