Quintana Roo Sargassum Season Ends with Record 91,505 Tons

CHETUMAL — The Secretariat of the Navy (Semar) reported that the 2025 sargassum season concluded with 91,505 tons collected along the coasts of Quintana Roo, a figure that exceeds the 2024 total by 147%, when 37,000 tons of the seaweed were removed.

Although the season officially ended on October 31, the Sargassum Attention Strategy 2025 remains active due to minor arrivals continuing in November.

In the last week alone, personnel from the XI Naval Zone based in Chetumal, supported by tourism service providers, removed an additional 13.5 tons.

Semar reported that the most critical period of sargassum influx occurred between June and September, including the high tourism season, when the majority of the collected volume was concentrated:

  • June: 15,803.36 tons
  • July: 18,419.48 tons
  • August: 16,719.62 tons
  • September: 12,085.73 tons

In the final stretch of the season, the quantity decreased, with October closing at 5,660.46 tons, and the first three days of November adding 276.11 tons.

The municipalities with the highest accumulation were:

  • Playa del Carmen: 33,117.38 tons
  • Benito Juárez (Cancún): 16,363.79 tons
  • Puerto Morelos: 14,069.38 tons
  • Othón P. Blanco: 12,996.96 tons
  • Tulum: 10,093.21 tons

In total, the 11 municipalities collected 61,340.81 tons, while Semar contributed 18,495.58 tons and the company Red Recolector contributed 11,945.69 tons.

During the season, Semar maintained 72 personnel deployed, 80 civilians, specialized machinery, and 2,265 meters of containment barriers installed at various points along the coastline.
