Saltillo, Coahuila — Saltillo International Airport has launched a direct flight route to Cancun, operating twice weekly on Thursdays and Sundays, as part of a state-led effort to enhance air connectivity between northern industrial regions and Mexico’s Caribbean coast.
The new route aims to stimulate tourism and business travel, with initial performance indicators showing strong market response. Oscar Perez Benavides, director of State Airport Services, confirmed the airport’s operational readiness, stating, “The airport is in excellent operational condition… you can see all the equipment we have available for operational safety.”
Flight occupancy rates are currently between 87% and 90%, indicating commercial viability. “The flight is practically full to Cancun… the performance has been quite acceptable,” Perez Benavides explained.
Maria Barbara Cepeda, Secretary of Strategic Projects, highlighted the logistical advantages of flying from Saltillo, noting lower costs and shorter travel times compared to other regional airports. “It’s more economical here… plus, travel times are shorter compared to other terminals in the region,” she said.
Passengers arriving from Cancun have praised the convenience of the new route. The initiative strengthens Saltillo International Airport’s position in the regional aviation network, focusing on point-to-point routes to improve state competitiveness without relying solely on traditional hubs.
