Cancún, Quintana Roo – The free transportation program “Ruta al Mar” has significantly increased the flow of citizens to Cancún’s beaches, connecting over a thousand people with the hotel zone in its first three weeks of operation and registering an 80% surge in access during the year-end period.
This service, which began as a pilot social mobility project, has proven successful, with more than 500 users transported just last weekend. The stops linking residential areas with popular beaches like Langosta and Gaviota Azul have seen the highest demand, demonstrating that the program is meeting a key need for access to public space for local residents.
The initiative goes beyond eliminating fare costs; it seeks to integrate various forms of mobility. Recently, the units were equipped with bicycle racks, promoting multimodal transportation and aligning with a vision of a sustainable city.
Héctor Sánchez Tirado, head of IMPLAN, emphasized that the positive response from users validates the importance of designing urban infrastructure by prioritizing people and their daily dynamics. The project aims to break the physical and economic barriers that have historically limited local families’ access to their own beaches.
Given the growing pace of growth, the Benito Juárez City Council faces the challenge of maintaining the service’s efficiency to meet continuous demand, reaffirming access to the sea as an effective right and not a privilege for the tourist zone.
