Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — The Riviera Maya Bar Association (BARM) has issued a public statement clarifying that it does not oppose the municipal government’s proposed updates to property tax assessment tables, known as Tablas de Valores Unitarios. The announcement comes amid discussions about modernizing fiscal instruments in Playa del Carmen.

In a formal letter signed by its Board of Directors, the association stated: “The Riviera Maya Bar Association wishes to emphatically clarify that it does not, in principle, oppose the updating of property tax assessment tables.” However, the group urged municipal treasurer Javier Regalado Hendricks to incorporate its recommendations to ensure the process remains “transparent, public, and legally compliant for the benefit of the community.”

BARM, led by President Luz del Carmen Hernández Ríos, acknowledged the local government’s need to strengthen public finances through updated fiscal tools. The association emphasized the importance of “a fair, realistic tax base aligned with current conditions” and framed its involvement as an exercise in “civic responsibility rather than obstruction.”

“As legal professionals, our duty is to uphold legality and judicial security,” the statement continued. “These principles do not conflict with revenue collection goals but ensure they are achieved sustainably and legitimately.”

The clarification follows recent political support for the updates, including from Deputy Hugo Alday, who endorsed the measure as necessary for municipal development.
