Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — A grease buildup in a restaurant’s ventilation system sparked a fire that prompted an emergency response in this popular tourist destination, authorities reported.
Firefighters responded to El Churrasquero restaurant on Boulevard Playa del Carmen near Avenida Juárez after receiving a 911 call reporting smoke coming from the establishment. Crews arrived to find a dense column of smoke billowing from the building.
Staff who were preparing for the day’s service were evacuated as a safety precaution.
Upon inspecting the kitchen area, firefighters determined the blaze originated in the exhaust hood, where accumulated grease ignited from heat generated by the restaurant’s ovens.
The prompt intervention prevented the fire from spreading to other parts of the building. Only minor material damage was reported in the food preparation area, and no injuries occurred.
After completing cooling operations, civil protection officials and firefighters urged restaurant management to conduct regular cleaning of their ventilation systems to prevent similar incidents that could result in greater losses.
