Through social media, users denounced a blockade on the highways leading to Tulum in Quintana Roo, Mexico, by residents who were complaining about the lack of tourism in the area. However, the government revealed that there was hotel occupancy between 85% and 100%.

Given exorbitant prices and beach usage fees, it is no secret that tourism in Tulum, Quintana Roo, has begun to decline, especially due to charges imposed by residents themselves on tourists.

However, on social media platforms like TikTok, users reported that there were roadblocks during the New Year’s 2025 period due to the drop in tourism in Tulum by the residents themselves, alleging that the government was no longer supporting them.

They also claimed that they continued to be asked for fees and permits to work in tourist areas, in addition to rents having increased, and according to residents, tourist occupancy during the New Year’s 2025 period in Tulum was barely 15%.

Nevertheless, the state secretary of Tourism of Quintana Roo, Bernardo Cueto Riestra, assured that for this New Year’s 2025 period, hotel occupancy was between 85% and 100% in its 12 tourist destinations.

As of December 20 last year, the four international airports of Quintana Roo—Cancún, Tulum, Cozumel, and Chetumal—had flights with 537,300 visitors in a single week.
