Mahahual, Quintana Roo — Residents of Mahahual carried out their threat and blocked the Cafetal-Mahahual highway on Wednesday morning in protest against alleged illegal evictions by state and municipal authorities, as well as what they describe as government neglect.
Total Disruption of Traffic
From the early hours of July 23, drivers reported a complete halt to vehicle traffic at the intersection connecting Chetumal, Xcalak, and Mahahual. Protesters obstructed the road by burning tires and piling garbage, dirt, and rocks near kilometer 48, before the entrance to Xcalak. According to reports, neither private vehicles nor commercial transport have been able to pass through the area.
One resident stated on social media, “The blockade will remain total until the governor arrives,” emphasizing the community’s determination to continue the protest until their demands are heard. Some accounts suggest that protesters have organized shifts to maintain the blockade for several days.
Alleged Unlawful Evictions and Government Neglect
Demonstrators claim they have been subjected to weeks of operations by the State Attorney General’s Office (FGE), resulting in evictions from properties inhabited by local families. They allege these actions were carried out without due process and with excessive use of force.
Beyond the evictions, residents cited widespread neglect by the state government regarding public services, infrastructure, and social support, which prompted the protest.
Authorities Advise Caution
Authorities have advised the public to avoid the area and take precautions, particularly for those planning travel to the Costa Maya region. The Mahahual community demands the presence of state officials to initiate dialogue and address their grievances.
