Residents Block Highway in Quintana Roo to Protest Military Presence

Limones, Mexico — Residents of the community of Limones blocked Federal Highway 307 on Saturday night, causing long traffic jams in both directions on the key route between Limones and Felipe Carrillo Puerto in Quintana Roo state.

Traffic authorities diverted motorists to a short detour to allow travel toward Chetumal or northward within the state. Police officers and federal security forces moved to the area to engage with the protesters.

Passengers on buses and stranded drivers reported the intense traffic through social media. The cause of the protest remains unclear, but it appears aimed at demanding the withdrawal of federal forces from the zone.

This marks the second blockade in as many days. On Friday, residents from the same community blocked the highway for about two hours, burning tires and branches on the roadway.

That mobilization sought to pressure the Mexican Navy and Mexican Army to halt operations in Limones, where a clash with a criminal group occurred five days earlier. Dozens of Navy, Army, and state forces responded, and the highway was cleared after several minutes.
