Cancún — State deputies of the Quintana Roo Congress will receive a new initiative to reform the General Law of Mobility of the State from the Executive branch in October, which seeks to modify the current concession models for transportation companies.

Aiming for Higher Quality, Modified Routes and Schedules

The news was announced by Rafael Hernández Kotasek, the current director of the Instituto de Movilidad del Estado de Quintana Roo (Imoveqroo), who detailed that the initiative also seeks to guarantee quality standards and modify routes and schedules.

The reform would help, for example, to implement buses that connect the municipality of Benito Juárez with Isla Mujeres, a corridor that, despite being heavily traveled by workers in the tourism industry, currently lacks a route with frequent schedules.

The Initiative Has Been Consensus-Built

He assured that the reform has been discussed with business chambers and current transportation concessionaires, who have collaborated on the initiative, in a way that does not affect their investments but does guarantee dignified transportation for citizens.

It is important to note that these modifications to the Mobility Law are also occurring amid a landscape where transport operators have begun procedures to increase the cost of public transportation in several municipalities of Quintana Roo. The proposals so far are for an increase of two pesos per person, although that will be defined in a citizen consultation.
