Cozumel, Quintana Roo — A Northern Potoo bird, a species crucial to the island’s ecological balance, was rescued from an urban area and safely released into the jungle after a citizen turned it over to firefighters.
The bird, scientifically known as Nyctibius jamaicensis, is rarely seen in inhabited zones. A resident found it within Cozumel’s urban sprawl and delivered it to the local fire station. Authorities then followed official wildlife protocols to return it to its natural habitat.
Noel Rivas Camo, operational subdirector of Ecology, explained that the Northern Potoo is a nocturnal species that lives and nests in Cozumel, playing a vital role in local biodiversity. The rescue was conducted in line with guidelines from the Institute of Biodiversity and Protected Natural Areas of Quintana Roo (IBANQROO), in coordination with the Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (PROFEPA), ensuring its safe return.
Rivas Camo noted that the bird’s cryptic plumage allows it to blend with tree branches, remaining hidden during the day. Its discreet behavior and nocturnal habits make sightings uncommon, highlighting the significance of this urban-area rescue.
“It’s an ally of the ecosystem because it helps maintain balance by regulating insect populations,” Rivas Camo said, emphasizing that the species is key to environmental health on the island, even though it isn’t listed as protected.
The incident underscores the importance of community collaboration in wildlife conservation. According to records, such rescues are rare, with only about five documented over the past decade in Cozumel.
