Two jaguars were recently spotted in the Dzilam de Bravo Ecological Reserve in Yucatan, bringing the total number of these majestic felines seen in the area to eight. These sightings were made possible through the use of advanced technology, including trap cameras and artificial intelligence audiomoths.
The Secretariat of Sustainable Development (SDS) confirmed the presence of jaguars in the reserve, a location known for successful reproduction of this important species. The sightings are part of a consistent monitoring effort to track and protect the local wildlife.
Toshio Yokoyama Cobá, the Head of Management and Conservation of Natural Resources, shared that these developments were presented at the “Summit & International Symposium on Smart Protected Areas” in Shenzhen, China. Yucatan was recognized for its innovative approach to nature conservation and is now considered a global reference.
These achievements are part of an ongoing three-year observation project. Yokoyama Cobá emphasized that Yucatan is the first subnational government to implement these tools, marking the progression to phase 2 of the Tech4Nature Project. This project aims to maintain a comprehensive record of the fauna in the area.
